Our school has a dedicated body of 18 governors who have the important role of supporting the Senior Leadership Team to ensure the school continues to go from strength to strength. The governors are unpaid volunteers who are elected or appointed to serve a 4 year term of office. In accordance to the Instrument of Government 2015 our membership is:
- 4 parent governors – who are elected by the parent body
- 1 local authority (LA) governor – who are appointed by the LA
- 1 staff governors – elected by the school staff
- 1 headteacher
- 9 Co-opted governors – appointed by the whole governing body
- 2 associate members – who are appointed by the whole governing body
All governors are required to comply with statutory safeguarding regulations and must have clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). All governors are also required to declare any conflicts of interest on appointment and then on an annual basis.
Role of a school governor
To work in partnership with the Headteacher to ensure the best possible education is provided for all children, whilst providing a high quality learning environment that makes the most effective use of available resources and complying with all statutory regulations and procedures. It is not the role of the school governor to become involved in the day to day running of the school but rather to have a strategic role of holding the school to account for overall standards through constructive challenge, whilst being a supportive body to the Senior Leadership team.
Governing Body organisation
The Governing Body meets for a full meeting 5 times per year but there are also two sub committees that meet at least termly. Resources – responsible for all finance, premises and staffing issues. Curriculum – responsible for monitoring school performance and the delivery of an enriching curriculum that is broad and balanced. Governors are also linked to classes and meet with the school staff to gather evidence and information on how the school is performing. The Governing Body also inform parents of their activities through a termly newsletter. All full governing body meeting minutes are available to read if requested via the school office.
